" Men of the First Regiment - you have on so many hard fought fields gained the name "Bloody First" - today your country calls on you again to stand between her and her enemy, and I know you will do your duty"

Gen. James Kemper
Dec 13, 1862

"You know I was identified with the First through many bloody vicissitudes. Jollier men in camp, braver soldiers in battle, were not found in the Army of Northern Virginia"

James Kemper
Governor of Virginia
July 17, 1875

" The old First Regiment was with me at Bull Run on the 18th of July, and made the first fight of Bull Run, which drove the Federals and forced them around Sudley Springs.  This move on their part was the cause of delay that gave us time to draw our troops down from the Valley, and concentrate for the fight of the 21st.  The heavy part of this fight was made by the old First Regiment, so that it can well claim to have done more towards the success of the First Manassas than any one regiment.  This too, was their first battle, and I can say that its officers and men did their duties as well, if not better, than any troops whose service came under my observation."

James Longstreet

The original Old Dominion Guard was designated as Company D of the 1st. Regiment Virginia Volunteers.  Today we are attached to the 2nd Battalion, 1st. Division, Army of Northern Virginia.  We are dedicated to teaching the public about the War Between the States through reenactments, living history programs, social events, ceremonies and taking part in films such as "Gettysburg" and "Gods and Generals".  Our members come from the greater Baltimore - Washington, D.C. area, some come from the Western Theater of Kentucky, Louisiana, and Texas, and we even have a few from as far away as England and Australia.  Our membership works together to honor the Confederate infantryman, and civilians who supported them at home, by recreating their life and times.
Company D, 1st Virginia Volunteer Infantry is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to the research, study and accurate depiction of persons and events of the American Civil War, both Union and Confederate.  Furthermore, the Company and its Officer Staff denounce racism, racial supremacists, hate groups and other groups or individuals that desecrate the symbols of the United States of America and the former Confederate States of America; and has no modern agenda or status.  Company D, 1st Virginia Volunteers through its Webmaster, reserves the right to edit or reject any material submitted for use on this web site.
